I couldn’t be happier with this Breville!

I’ve had this oven a little over a month now, and I love it! It replaces my Cuisinart Convection Steam Oven – two years into owning that toaster oven, the steam option died, so I was left with convection bake, and broil, and toast. This Breville is miles ahead in my opinion.I cook a lot, I bake a lot. If I can use both my Bosch oven and my toaster oven, I’m happy. If I can use only the toaster oven, I’m even happier (doesn’t heat the house up as much, the energy consumption is less). I’ve roasted a whole chicken, made air fryer chicken nuggets and chicken parmesan, roasted mixed vegetables, made air fryer sweet potato fries, roasted nuts in the shells, baked 3 types of cookies and 1 cake, 2 batches of muffins (3rd came out today, house smells like cinnamon), baked beans, and well… a lot of cooking in the past month. Oh, and toast and bagels every morning! I’ve used the Roast, Bake, Broil, Air Fryer, Toast, Bagel, Cookies (yes, cookies!), and Proof settings. What I love about the Breville:*The knob controls. My Cuisinart used 1 knob for primary controls – multiple controls. The Breville is so user friendly – my non-cooking husband has no problems figuring it out. The controls and buttons are all labeled and easy to understand.*It’s spacious for a toaster oven. I mean, toaster ovens shouldn’t be overly huge, they need to fit on a counter. I can fit 2 medium casseroles (reheating is such a joy with this oven!). I can fit my 12-muffin pan in it. I can fit a small roast and a small whole chicken in it.*It has a dedicated convection button. Love that and so easy to use. It has a “phase” button. You can set it to brown a roast, then bake (or roast) it. I often need to broil after I bake something, and that’s what the phase is for – does it after you program it, automatically. 2 different cooking methods and temps and times, one time setting.*It has a countdown timer which shuts the oven off. Some like this, some don’t. I do. I will still use a separate timer, and often set the oven a little longer than needed – but, you can always add time, or change the temperature while you are cooking. You don’t have to stop the oven to do this.*It stops the timer when you open the door. Thank you, Breville. You get it.*It’s a toaster oven and makes great toast! Nice and crunchy outside, softer inside. Settings for light to dark and setting for number of slices. Do keep in mind, a larger toaster oven will take a bit longer to toast than a very small one.*Air fryer… I didn’t want another item to store. But we are trying to eat healthier. While this isn’t a dedicated air fryer and might not have quite the power, we’ve really enjoyed our crispy chicken nuggets and chicken parm, the crisp of the sweet potato fries (took me a while to get the timing and method right, but wowsers!). Comes with a really nice sized air fryer basket. I spray it with a bit of olive oil, and find even if cheese gets stuck on, a soak in sudsy water and a quick rub with a stainless steel cleaning pad makes it sparkle again.*Oh, and the magnet on both sides of the door – it’s for the air fryer basket, which can get very hot… so when you open the door the air fryer basket gets pulled out a ways for you. I love the person who came up with that brilliant idea!*Comes with a pizza pan (haven’t used that yet) and a roasting pan, which oddly, I have used for the first time in my life. I line it with foil or parchment, and the weight of it is perfect for baking fish, chicken, or roasting veggies. Anything, really.*I’ve set this under an 18” high cabinet (standard) and after 1-1/2 hours baking, and finishing with a quick broil, the cabinet underside has not gotten overheated.*I love the crumb tray/removable bottom. Many toasters have this now. I lined mine with a 500 F Teflon oven mat (purchased on Amazon, of course), in case I get any drips or messes. Easy to clean!*It preheats very quickly with a clear flashing ‘preheating’ text, and an alarm tells you it’s time to put your food in, and another lets you know when the time is up (plus the interior light comes on just before, so you can take a look at the progress).Honestly, I could go on and on. I’ve found no negatives thus far. I find myself saying each time I use it: “I love this oven!”. Highly recommend!

As good as a Second Oven in our house.

Our old toaster oven was squealing its convection fan somewhere in a b# tone that drove the family nuts. Finally decided to look for a replacement and I wasn’t sure I really ‘needed’ an air-fryer solution combined with the functionality we’ve used for years. Boy was I wrong! Compared to the air-fryers I’ve seen at friends and family, I really liked that this looks and functions as a toaster oven that also includes the air-fryer feature.Easy to use as there are several modes of cooking you select with a dial, then a timer (also a dial) and then push start. I’ve used it to cook chicken legs (a whole 12 pack) with the air-fryer feature and they turned out great after a few experiments with timing and an instant read thermometer.I like that it’s big enough to hold an entire casserole dish, which allows us to cook side dishes while our single oven is focused on the larger or more demanding cooking tasks. I consider this to be as effective as a second oven, with space as the only compromise over a full-sized option. The one downside I would comment on is that there isn’t a temperature probe to help with identifying when something is cooked to the correct temperature. This is especially missed with the air-fryer feature being a new addition to our cooking repertoire. For example, I tried using an online airfryer chicken leg recipe to judge how long and at what temperature to cook at; but my instant temp thermometer ended up requiring that I double the time I originally set (not the fault of the oven, just unfamiliar with the function.) I also miss not having a rotisserie feature that our last toaster oven had. I am that odd-ball that used the rotisserie to cook whole chickens and pork tenderloins. Not having that wasn’t a deal breaker, and we knew we weren’t getting that feature, so nothing taken away from the product that does a great job at what it does. Oh, and one last thing – air frying take a considerable amount of time to warm up (okay, “considerable” is subjective), most noticeable after the timer stops and temp check says it needs to go some more – which surprisingly came with another preheat cycle. However, having never owned an air-fryer before, I’m not sure if this is standard to all air-frying units or not; again not a deal breaker or even a detractor from a 5-star rating, just something new to us.

A few things you should be aware of….

ADDED TO REVIEW ON 4/29/18: Some problems with the oven after a few months of use. First, the door hinge got stuck several times causing the door not to close. This issue has been reported in other Amazon reviews of this product. Next, the timer stopped working as well. I contacted Breville and they will be replacing the oven, but I am a little suspicious of quality control after now paying attention to a few negative reviews on this page.——————This was not my first choiceAll I wanted was an air fryer. I was intrigued by the fact that there were appliances that could fry foods without the need for oil. I spent countless hours pouring over reviews of leading air fryer models. I was set on purchasing the most expensive one by Philips at nearly $300.I then read a comment somewhere that if I was going to spend $300 on an air fryer, I might as well spend an extra $100 on the Breville Smart Oven as I would essentially be getting a full-service oven with high-capacity air frying capability.I decided to take the chance on that option despite a few reviews saying that dedicated air fryer appliances did a slightly better job air frying than this particular oven. This was an expensive purchase, no doubt. However, I had an aging Toastmaster oven that was nearly 30 years old but still kickin’ butt! There really was no need to replace it, but you could just imagine what a huge upgrade in modernization this Breville presented. At first, the Breville Smart Oven seems intimidating. There is an elaborate selection screen and lots of dials and buttons. However, just experimenting for several minutes, I was able to quickly figure out the basics. The oven already has temperature and time presets for just about any cooking need you may have. From that point, the dials simply alter heating temperatures and cooking times. Here are some things you should be aware of….There is a design flaw in this oven that puts one at a huge disadvantage if placed on a higher shelf, which I initially did, above my microwave. The door opens top to bottom. This puts a huge strain on anyone placing and removing food from the oven as the door blocks arm movement. It would have been a far better choice for Breville to make a door that swings open from the side.Additionally, if placed on a higher shelf, you cannot read the menu screen. I have read many complaints in Amazon reviews that the screen is unreadable. It is unreadable if placed on a shelf. If you place it on a counter at eye level or below, there is no issue reading the screen. So, the big point here is that you should plan to place this on a counter, not a shelf. The oven works very well in all the cooking tests I put it through. One of the things I am not fond of is that everything starts with a preheat. However, once the preheat is done (and you will get several beeps indicating such), the cooking time begins counting down. This is a pain-in-the-neck because it takes about a minute to grab your food and place it in the oven. At that point, you have to turn the dial back to the proper cooking time that the oven initially sets for you. The best thing Breville could have done is to “freeze” the cooking time once preheat is done and then let the user push the button again to start the actual cooking countdown. So, let me talk about the essential aspect of this oven which is its air frying capability….The Breville includes a large air frying tray that allows air to circulate through its screen door design. It allows an ample amount of french fries to be placed on it.The best advice I can give is to ignore the instructions given on the package of french fries. Use the actual recommended time that Breville programs into its Air Fryer menu selection. You really want to cook it at a slightly lower temperature for a longer period of time. Breville does an excellent job with its preset temperature and time.I tried air frying both Nathans french fries and Orida Tater Tots. The french fries came out very good — crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. However, something about it just didn’t scream “fried” to me. At best, the results were slightly better than just baking it in the oven. They really tasted more like baked fries rather than those fried in oil. The Tater Tots came out better. Those were really crisp on the outside and comparable to those I would cook in a pan with a little bit of oil.I think, overall, the problem with the Breville air fryer function is that you are frying without oil. That can be a good thing, but at the same time, you aren’t getting that flavor which oil provides. If you actually fried french fries in oil and placed them in a blind taste next to the air fryer version, I would bet anyone would instantly pick the fried version as the better tasting product.I haven’t been able to compare the Breville to one of the dedicated Air Fryer appliances, and perhaps they really do a more phenomenal job. The best I can say is that the Breville does a great job at coming close to producing actual fried results, but it won’t pass a blind test against the real thing.Another issue I have is the lack of support from Breville themselves. Before purchasing this oven, I wrote their customer support an email asking how much distance this oven needed to be placed from the back wall. Breville never answered me. That is a bit concerning when this is customer support you may need to rely on should something go wrong with this oven. To answer my question, there are nubs on the back of the oven that gives you proper back wall placement.People have complained that the oven does smoke. I have experienced this with every item I have cooked. For me, it’s no big deal. As long as the oven is working as expected, I don’t care if it gives off a small amount of smoke.I would recommend purchasing and placing baking matts in the bottom grill tray as it can be a chore cleaning without it. You can purchase these matts for dirt cheap on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XKJDYL1/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1Overall, this is a terrific oven, though with some really bad design choices that force one to not be able to mount it on a higher shelf. Please do take note of this when considering a purchase.

Dent made right / checking temperature accuracy

The media could not be loaded.

THE DENTMy Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro arrived with a deep dent in precisely the same location other reviewers have noted, namely, top right edge back. I have to believe this is a Breville packaging flaw coupled with the shipper ignoring the “this side up” notices. The oven’s crumb tray is packaged right there, and the styrofoam packing is thinner at that point to enable the crumb tray to fit securely. Unfortunately, if the box is handled upside down, the thinner styrofoam packing right at that point causes the crumb tray handle to dent into the oven top. It’s unfortunate to need to return a brand new Breville Smart Oven for a cosmetic dent, but I paid for a new oven, not a scratch-and-dent, so back it went. As always, Amazon came through and had a replacement — undented — in my hands in two days.TEMPERATURE ACCURACYSetting up the Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro requires nothing more than giving the interior a quick thorough wipe with a damp microfiber towel to remove any manufacturing residues and plugging it in. After that, I wanted to check its temperature accuracy. I set an oven thermometer inside, set the oven’s function to “pizza” (400° F) and tapped the ON button. After almost exactly five minutes preheating, the oven notified me it had reached temperature. The thermometer I’d placed in the oven though read 275° F. So, what gives? Turning to the manual, I read that the preheat alert sounds at 75% of the target temperature. 275° is 69% of 400°. Not quite the 75% stated in the manual, but close enough for me.After a minute or two more the oven read precisely 400° and held that temp consistently for the 20 minutes I monitored it. I’m real pleased with this oven’s baking temp accuracy.CamelCamelCamelI got this oven for a great price thanks to CamelCamelCamel’s price watch feature. If you haven’t used Camel to monitor Amazon prices, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Camel lets you price watch any product available from Amazon. You enter the item, your target price, and if Amazon puts your item on sale, Camel notifies you. I got this oven for $299 rather than its normal $399 price thanks to Camelcamelcamel. Amazon has great prices to begin with — Camel makes them even better.WRAP-UPOverall very pleased with this purchase. A wee bit disappointed in the dent fiasco, but that’s not worth taking off a star as Amazon immediately made it right. Oven has intuitive features, accurate temperatures, and looks fairly nice. If you’re on the fence, go for it.

Really nice toaster oven. Not perfect.

This is my second “air fryer” toaster oven that I’ve owned, the first being a Cuisinart model that cooked *really* fast and required no pre-heat on the air fry mode, but it had a control knob that just wore out over time until the whole oven was basically useless since it became impossible to set anything. While it worked, though, that thing did everything basically as fast as a microwave while cooking things a lot better. And it cost less than half of what this Breville does even when it’s on sale.I had known about the Breville for quite some time, had seen the glowing reviews everywhere and always kind of wished for one, but the price has always been steep. Luckily I was able to finally get one on sale during the Christmas season. It was still not what I’d call cheap, but it wasn’t completely unreasonable for what it’s supposed to be able to do. That said, being on the very high end of what a toaster oven normally costs, my standards are raised as well. I was expecting it to be significantly better in most ways than my Cuisinart.Aaaaaand… it’s really not. It’s good, don’t get me wrong. In the modes I’ve used so far (air fry, roast, bake, reheat, probably a couple others), it cooks quite evenly and gently. I have no problem with the food that comes out of it, and I guess that’s really the most important thing. Its controls are also intuitive (separate knobs for mode, time and temp, unlike the single knob for everything on my Cuisinart) and *in general* it has a premium look and feel. I say in general because my temp knob has a gritty feel that doesn’t match the other two, which are both super smooth. It still works fine, and it’s definitely not worth exchanging the oven over, it just doesn’t feel like the other two knobs and I feel like that shouldn’t be the case in a toaster oven this expensive. It’s like buying a new Mercedes S-class and getting a shift knob that feels like there’s dirt deep down in the mechanism. Just a lack of attention to detail in a product you’re literally paying extra for to get that.Knob issue aside, everything feels chunky and solid down to the included racks and accessories, which are all made of thicker materials than my Cuisinart. There are also small but appreciated touches like the door having magnets so that assuming you have your rack in the correct position, it will pull out automatically when you open the door. Additionally, the interior light comes on automatically a few seconds before your cook time is up. That’s the kind of thing I expect from a several hundred dollar toaster oven. The Breville is big enough to cook almost anything. My wife thought it was actually too big at first, and even I had a little trepidation when I first took it out of the box, but it fit under our kitchen cabinets just fine and now looks like it’s always been there on our counter. So its external size isn’t really a big deal, but it is nice to be able to actually cook a full roast or chicken in there, and I have done that. They even give you two standard racks – you could really cook a huge amount of food in this thing, basically as much as most people ever cook in their regular oven at one time. I prefer using a toaster oven over my regular oven whenever I can because it uses a lot less energy and also pre-heats a lot faster. So it is nice being able to really replace my oven almost all the time now that I have the Breville. (The only time I really use my regular oven anymore is when I need to cook at two different temperatures.)My complaints, if you could really call them that, mostly come down to the speed and convenience of cooking. Again, my Cuisinart was super-fast to the point that a lot of people complained that it would burn their food – and I did often need to adjust my cook times *down* (and sometimes my temperatures) so that that wouldn’t happen. But it’s hard to criticize an oven for cooking things *too fast*, especially on air fry mode. It’s not like it cooked unevenly, or burnt the outside while leaving the inside uncooked. And the temps were actually right on; I checked them. No, it cooked evenly and everything was done; it was just almost always done earlier than the instructions said. And it didn’t require a preheat. The Breville does require pre-heating in every mode I use, including air frying. And it’s a big oven so while it takes less time than a conventional oven, it still can take a little while to do that. Once it is pre-heated, air frying usually takes a bit *longer* than the instructions say. I almost always have to add an extra couple of minutes. Once the food is done, I would say it’s a little more “refined” than the Cuisinart in that there are basically never burnt edges or anything like that. It’s super even. But it just takes about double the total time, given the pre-heat plus the extra cook time.I think the fan placement may be the difference. The Breville seems to only have a fan on the side, and while it has two speeds (one for convection, one for “super” convection that’s also used in air fry mode), I feel like in order to not burn the food on one side, it’s having to pull some tricks out of its sleeve that make the cooking take longer. The Cuisinart had its fan on the top and it just blew hot air down on all the food at once, which is the way a real air fryer works. This is one reason why people say toaster ovens don’t make great air fryers, because most of them have their fans on the side like the Breville. Having it on top definitely makes for a more authentic air fryer experience. The side fan basically just makes it more like a slightly faster convection oven than a true air fryer. When in super convection (or air fry) mode, the fan is *loud*. It’s not a pleasing fan sound either; it sounds like an old bathroom fan that’s on its way out. This, again, is something I’d expect to be better on a toaster oven this expensive. They need a better motor or just a better fan in there.Other cooking modes are similar to the air fry mode in that they all cook well and evenly but are just slower than I always expect. “Reheat” is another mode that I use all the time for leftovers and while my Cuisinart would reheat food as fast as my microwave but without the sogginess (if I turned the fan on), the Breville actually says in the manual that its goal is to “gently” reheat food so it doesn’t get dried out. In practice this seems to mean that it just comes up to temperature super slowly. Even if I turn the temp up to like 450, it takes about 10 minutes to reheat a slice of refrigerated pizza. The Cuisinart would do that in about 4 minutes and it would be bubbling hot at that point. So, I absolutely do not dislike this oven, and a lot of this is just heightened expectations due to the price. But those expectations are inescapable; this oven is not cheap and we should be getting more for that money. That said, if all you care about is the quality of the food that (eventually) comes out of this oven, it will give you that quality. The food is always nice and evenly cooked, whatever mode you put it in.I would put the Breville more into an “oven replacement” category than an actual air fryer toaster oven category. It cooks like a real oven, but often that is not what I want from a toaster oven or air fryer. Sometimes I just want stuff heated up real quick and I don’t care if it’s perfect; I just don’t want it to be chewy or soggy like a microwave would do. The Breville does not seem able to do that. It requires a time investment, whatever you’re cooking or heating.

    Worth the price.

Multi purpose oven that does everything well. Love the dough proofing feature. And it easily holds a proofing bowl with dough for two loaves. Cuts proofing time and perfectly controlled temp. My first experience with air fryer…. it’s a time saver and great results. I bought this oven as an upgrade for the Breville I had for years. The power switch finally began to fail and I saw this one on sale at Amazon. Pricey, but Breville quality. Totally pleased. And it’s large enough to take s 9×13 pan. I haven’t used by regular stove oven even once in 2 months I’ve had this. Saves electricity. And it’s a super quiet convection oven.

    Best Choice!

We have used this little oven in our coffee shop for 18 months and it has never let us down. We have put it through approximately 1,000 baking cycles at over 400° and it just keeps going. We bought another a month ago as a backup…hasn’t even been out of the box…we just keep using the older one! What a fantastic product from Breville…so glad we chose this one out of all the options out there!

Unsure if I would buy again

There’s definitely good and bad. However, if I’m really being honest with myself the best part of this little oven is that we live in Texas and it is blazingly hot here nine months a year and if we use our regular oven it will increase the temperature of our house and often times it’s a losing battle to ever get the temperature down again. before this oven they were definitely four months a year I told my boyfriend get your pizza someplace else you’re not putting it in our oven. so that part has been wonderful. It’s really nice to be able to cook up a frozen pizza in an incredibly short period of time without affecting the temperature of my house, and you can apply that to other things as well. Now for the bad. I don’t really feel like this is an air fryer in the same way that perhaps a small one is. I don’t know that for a fact because I don’t have a small one and I’ve never used one, but this really left me feeling like I don’t know what all the rage is about. With this version, I would never put anything in there that’s gonna drip because it is impossible to clean. There is no clean function on it.It also cooks unevenly. if you’re cooking a pizza for 10 minutes you had better turn it at five. One side will be burned and the other side won’t be cooked enough. The toast function is a joke. It takes six minutes for me to get a piece of toast, and even then only one side is toasted and it is completely inconsistent. One piece of toast needs a setting of at least four pieces of toast for it to do anything. Now to the really irritating part for a piece of equipment that cost this much money. They use cheap cheap cheap stainless steel and tell you you can’t dishwash anything. So they give you a basket that is mesh, how in the hell are you supposed to wash some thing that’s mesh. Try to put a sponge on it it will rip it to pieces, try and scrub brush it’s going to take the coating off, so now I have used the air fryer basket maybe eight times and I already have to buy a new one. That is unacceptable. Use quality stainless steel that everyone can put in a dishwasher. The worst part, is that this isn’t just a plug-and-play option. None of the temperatures and cook times that you use in your regular oven are going to work in this oven. It would be really nice if they gave you some conversion options of where to start, but they don’t. So just imagine having a recipe and being like I don’t know I guess I’ll reduce it by 10° and four minutes or maybe next time I’ll decrease it by 15° and knock off a minute I mean there’s gonna be a lot of wasted recipes. It’s like you don’t know how to cook.If you live in a super hot state, or maybe you live in a tiny house or have an RV, I’m sure this is a great option. I just wish I was about 40% happier. I would really like an oven that I use more than heating up and cooking pizza because that’s really not a huge part of my life.

Breville honored its warranty on this very useful & good product

For more than a year, we were pretty pleased with this little oven and used it daily to make toast, bake brownies, sweet potatoes, pizza and small dinner dishes, to air fry vegetables and reheat leftovers. Air fried vegetables like broccoli, Brussel sprouts and cauliflower became household staples typically taking just 10 min. or so to cook (though I’ve read that dedicated air fryers make crispier vegetables). Our wall oven was still needed for larger items like cookie sheets and Thanksgiving meals. After about 1.25 yrs. of use, the function selector knob on this little oven became difficult to use. It was still under warranty so we followed Breville customer service’s instructions and sent it back for repair via UPS (no charge to us). Breville acknowledged receipt of our oven, and 16 days from the date we sent it in, we received a brand new replacement oven with the accessories at no charge. While all manufacturers should honor their warranties, shout out and appreciation to Breville for such smooth customer service and standing behind its product so honorably. What we experienced makes us trust this company.

    This thing COOKS

This oven is wonderful!!!!Capacity: It fits a 9×13” cooking dish easily, a full sized pizza, and almost anything I personally want to cooksCapability: the toast setting takes a loooong time – but if you can be patient it makes wonderful toast, toasted hamburger buns for cookouts, etc. I love the super convection and frozen settings a lot!Cleanup: the stainless steel crumb catcher is a dream to clean – it still looks brand new, and I have used it daily since purchasing.I love this machine so much!
